Is it really that bad to sleep in makeup?

Short answer: yes. It really is bad, and you shouldn’t do it. We’ve all been there – you get home late at night and the last thing you want to do is go through your whole skincare regime before you jump into bed. We’ve been told time and time again to never leave our makeup on, but one night can’t hurt right?! Well, here’s exactly what happens when you don’t take your makeup off before bed…

When we neglect to wash our face at night, our pores are unable to breathe because they are clogged with makeup and grime from the day. Vital restoration and regeneration cannot take place, resulting in breakouts, fine lines, blackheads, dullness, and puffiness and dark circles around the eyes.

One night of sleeping in makeup is unlikely to cause long-lasting skin damage. And while that is good news for those one-time offenders, bear in mind that each night you do sleep in your makeup results in your pores becoming more clogged leading to the development of pimples and acne.

Thinking longer term, sleeping in your makeup can lead to premature ageing (gasp!). During the day your skin accumulates a lot of oxidative stress. When you sleep in your makeup you are not giving your skin a chance to recover from those insults, which can result in skin ageing quicker than normal. Dr Schweiger, founder of the Clear Clinic, notes that “free radicals from the environment (often in the form of pollution) remain on the skin when you do not clean your face properly at night. Free radicals cause collagen breakdown over time, which results in the development of fine lines and prematurely aged skin.” That is the last thing we want, especially in a world where we are encouraged to look younger not older!

It’s not just foundation and heavy powders that do the damage. While sleeping in your eye makeup will not cause fine lines or acne, it can still cause problems. “Mascara and eyeliner can be rubbed by your pillow and end up in your eyes, which can lead to significant eye irritation”, says Dr Schweiger. “Sleeping in eye makeup repeatedly may result in the clogging of the tiny hair follicles and oil glands on your eyelids. When these areas become clogged, bacteria can build up and cause inflammation. As a result, small bumps called styes or hordeolums can form. These bumps may resolve on their own, but many require treatment from your doctor.”

So next time you are tempted to forego your normal skincare routine after a late night, think twice. In the short-term you run the risk of waking up with pimples and dry skin, in the long-run you can cause permanent damage to your skin and age prematurely.

To give you a head start, the experts have provided some tips for cleansing to make sure all of your makeup is removed, giving your skin the best chance to repair overnight:

  1. Always tie your hair back beforehand: Although it seems like a no-brainer, putting your hair in a ponytail is pretty important when it comes to removing your makeup. By getting all the hair out of your face, your hairline will be exposed, which is essential since a lot of makeup residue tends to build up there.
  2. Makeup remover wipes aren’t enough: While makeup remover wipes may seem like a quick and easy way to remove your makeup, they don’t do the job completely. Makeup remover wipes will only remove product from the surface of your skin, which isn’t sufficient enough when it comes to makeup removal. If you’re going to use makeup wipes, use them as a first step to take most of your makeup off, but always go in with a cleanser afterwards.
  3. Invest in a good-quality eye makeup remover (such as our Soothing Eye Makeup Remover), and a natural cleanser that is gentle on the skin (such as our Skin Refining Cream Cleanser or Purifying Cleanser)
  4. Make sure to double-cleanse: When you’re cleansing your face to remove makeup, two-timing is the way to go. The first wash is to remove the makeup, and then the second is to properly clean the skin. Plus, your second cleanse should also be used to massage your face to boost circulation, which will keep your complexion healthy and glowing.

So get cleansing, and enjoy skin that is clean, fresh and clear!

White tea – the new skincare super-ingredient

White tea is quickly becoming known as a miracle ingredient in the skincare world, due to its high catechin (antioxidant) content. Among other benefits, white tea is highly effective at minimising the visible signs of ageing – something that holds growing importance as we all strive to look 10 years younger!

As a drink, tea has long been known for its antioxidant qualities. Made from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant, harvested tea leaves undergo various degrees of processing to result in the end product we drink (and now use in skincare!). Harvesting changes the leaves’ chemical composition and reduces the content of catechins. There are three major types of tea: black, green and white tea. They differ by the method of harvesting and processing, resulting in different levels of antioxidant content.

Black tea has a much lower catechin (antioxidant) content than green and white tea, due to the process of fermenting the leaves. Green tea is widely known for its antioxidant qualities, however the process of drying green tea leaves actually reduces the amount of catechins in the final product.

The least well known of the tea types, white tea is the unsung hero. White tea has the highest catechin content of the three major tea variations, due to the fact that it is minimally processed. It is made of the best quality young and baby tea leaves which are steamed immediately after harvest to inactivate the enzyme that destroys catechins. The white tea leaves are then sun dried. Because of this minimal processing white tea has a very high concentration of antioxidants, making it highly effective in the anti-ageing market.

Recent studies have found that white tea is more effective in this anti-ageing arena than its more well-known counterpart, green tea. Elma Baron, director of the Skin Study Center at University Hospitals of Cleveland (UHC) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), has carried out extensive research on the benefits of white tea in skincare. Dr. Baron says, “We found the application of white tea extract protects critical elements of the skin’s immune system. Similar to the way oxidation causes a car to rust, oxidative stress on the skin causes a breakdown in cellular strength and function. The white tea extract protects against this stress.”

Similarly, other studies have proven that topical application of white tea is effective in boosting the immune function of skin cells and protecting them against the damaging effects of sun exposure. The antioxidant property of white tea is what makes it effective as an anti-aging ingredient in skincare. Kevin Cooper, chairman of the department of dermatology at UHC and CWRU says, “We know that younger skin tends to be able to resist the oxidative stress associated with exposure to the destructive rays of sunlight. The white tea extract also appears to build the skin’s resistance against stresses that cause the skin to age.”

White tea extract protects your skin from more than just sun damage. All skin contains matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), an enzyme that gobbles up the collagen and elastin that keeps our skin looking young. Small amounts of MMP in younger skin is healthy, however as we age the amount of MMP in the skin increases resulting in visible signs of ageing. Applying white tea extract to the skin inhibits the activity of the MMP enzyme, so collagen and elastin can continue performing their task of maintaining your skin’s appearance.

So what does this all mean? Long story short, white tea extract has been proven to minimise the visible signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots and sagging skin. Great news! This is why we have included white tea extract in the majority of our Natural Skincare products. This super-ingredient is the next big thing in the fight against ageing, are you going to get on board?

Meet Sachiko Kawakami: April’s Winner of $2,000 of Linden Leaves!

Meet Sachiko Kawakami, April’s 20th Anniversary Competition winner! We had a chat to her about some of her favourite things, and how she felt when she found out she’d won $2,000 of Linden Leaves!

How did you feel when you found out you had won this month’s draw?

I was so thrilled! I initially pictured $2,000 worth of Lindt chocolate ha ha…. But I soon realised it was Linden Leaves which is even better! I am so grateful for this prize, thank you so much.

Tell us a little more about yourself?

I was a single mum with a 6-year-old daughter, when I migrated to New Zealand from Japan in 2003. We initially lived in Canterbury and then moved to Tauranga. New Zealand has healed my soul and continues to empower me.

What are some of your favourite things?

I listen to Hayhouse Radio every day as I do not have a TV. I like going to organic shops & health shops. I enjoy heavy weightlifting & Chi Kung. I also love relaxing with my Siamese “Toffee”.

What is your skincare routine?

I look after my skin from the inside and outside. As my digestive system is quite sensitive, I detoxify with good nutrition & supplements. I dry brush my skin and go to a sauna daily as a way to cleanse my skin. And I apply Linden Leaves body oil after a shower.

What is your favourite Linden Leaves Product?

Memories Body Oil has been my favorite Linden Leaves product over the last decade. I initially fell in love with this product in Canterbury 12-13 years ago. The oil is so gentle that I apply it on my face as well as body & hair. My daughter with severe eczema finds it gentle and hydrating too. The red rose in a bottle of golden oil is just so beautiful sitting on my dresser or in the bathroom. The beautiful scent uplifts my spirit during the day and relaxes my mind at night.

Getting figgy with nutritionist Emily Hope – your winter nutrition sorted!

It’s officially autumn. Daylight savings has ended, and the long balmy summer evenings along with it… sigh! The change of season is the perfect time to reassess your diet and skincare as we head into the cooler months.

Skin can often become ultra dry, flaky and dull as the temperatures drop and we are exposed to more extreme temperatures. Likewise, our healthy eating can go completely out the window during winter as we reach for those carb-laden, hearty comfort meals.

So we got in touch with Emily Hope – a NZ Registered Nutritionist (BSc, MSc Human Nutrition from the University of Otago) who now lives on her family fig orchard in Marlborough – to discuss her approach to nutrition and shed some light on the importance of maintaining a healthy, wholefoods diet year-round. She’s even shared a couple of her ahhh-mazing recipes featuring figs, the perfect ingredient for that winter hit of sweetness! Check out her guest blog below…

My nutrition degree ignited a love for food, cooking and health. However, time abroad living in a small village in Northern Italy brought my passion to life.

After living and working in both public health and corporate nutrition in Auckland, I moved home to the farm and fig orchard where I live with my husband and our Black Labrador Hank. During the fig season I divide my time between working in the family fig orchard picking and packing figs and cooking with them daily, and working at my nutrition business (Hope Nutrition) where I offer a full-range of nutrition services.

Food is to be enjoyed so it’s all about preparing and enjoying great tasting nutritious meals and snacks with those around you

My nutrition philosophy is a holistic approach to food and health. I encourage people to focus on choosing whole, fresh and natural foods as often as they can to provide a range of nutrients that nourish the mind and the body. I love providing inspiration and motivation to people who are looking for healthy and delicious ways to enjoy nutritious foods. After all, food is to be enjoyed so it’s all about preparing and enjoying great tasting nutritious meals and snacks with those around you.

The importance of nourishing yourself through the food that you eat has never been as topical as it is today. As a nutritionist, I’m a firm believer in a wholefoods approach to food and really focusing on feeding your body as many nutrients as possible. This way, there is a positive approach to food and wellness by focusing on those nutritious foods that you can eat each day, rather than focusing on foods which aren’t as nutritious. Our bodies work extremely hard for us day in and day out and wholefoods provide a range of necessary macronutrients, vitamins, minerals and fiber which help our bodies and our mind to perform optimally each and every day. These nutrients support healthy digestion, healthy blood, working muscles and our organs which are undertaking complex tasks every second of the day.

Our bodies work extremely hard for us day in and day out and wholefoods provide a range of necessary macronutrients, vitamins, minerals and fiber

On the other hand, processed and refined foods tend to be low in these much-needed nutrients while being high in unhealthy levels of fat, sugar and salt all of which can take away from our health and can lead to health-related conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and an increased risk of heart disease.

There is always a way to make your favourite foods healthy and delicious and one of the things I love most about nutrition is the cooking and eating aspect of it! It’s so important for people to be confident and knowledgeable in the kitchen so they can create scrumptious, wholesome meals. A simple tip is to fill your fridge and pantry with as many wholefoods as possible as this will make cooking and eating healthy meals much easier. Aim to stock up on foods such as lean meat, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and good quality fats like cheese, yoghurt, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil. If you have nutritious foods as your first port of call, you’re already over halfway there!

Fill your fridge and pantry with as many wholefoods as possible as this will make cooking and eating healthy meals much easier

Being surrounded by a bountiful fig orchard, I’m always inspired to eat and cook with fresh figs. Not only are they utterly delicious but they also highly nutritious. Figs are a wonderful source of fiber which helps to support a healthy digestive system and regular bowel movements to help eliminate waste from the body. Fresh figs provide valuable vitamins and minerals to support all of the chemical reactions that take place in our bodies every second of the day. Like other fruits and vegetables, fresh figs provide much-needed antioxidants which undertake the important job of mopping up free-radicals within the body to protect cells from damage which in turn supports a reduced risk of diet-related diseases.

Figs are truly a healthy foodie’s dream ingredient! They are delicately sweet and pair beautifully with many different foods in both sweet and savoury dishes. My favourite way to eat them is simply sliced on homemade muesli for breakfast with a dollop of Greek yoghurt and a sprinkling of cinnamon, or halved and smeared with butter and honey and grilled until golden for dessert. If you have a bit more time on your hands (but not much as these recipes are so simple!) and you’d like to impress family and friends with your fig-prowess, then make sure you try the two recipes below. They are both so highly delectable you’ll have people lining up at your door!

Wholesome Fig Crumble

Serves 6

Baked figs with a crunchy topping are totally scrumptious and this baked crumble is no exception. I’ve been known to make an entire crumble just so I can enjoy it for breakfast over the following days. This crumble is most delicious served warm for dessert with a dollop of Greek yoghurt, coconut cream or even some freshly whipped cream.

Just baked, it’s warming, wholesome and is the perfect way to enjoy the bounty of ripe fresh figs.

fig crumble

2 Tbspn coconut oil
12-14 figs – sliced into quarters
2 Tbspn honey
1 cinnamon stick

2 Tbspn coconut oil, melted
1 cup ground almonds
½ cup desiccated coconut
¼ cup raw sugar or brown sugar
1 cup homemade toasted muesli

  1. To make the figs, place the coconut oil into a medium-sized saucepan over a medium heat and let it melt. Next add the figs, honey and cinnamon stick and stir gently.
  2. Simmer the figs for about 10 minutes or until just soft. Meanwhile pre-heat the oven to 180°C.
  3. To make the crumble topping, place all of the ingredients into a bowl and stir together with a spoon or your hands until well combined.
  4. When the figs are ready, pour them into an oven-proof baking dish (remove the cinnamon stick) and top the figs with the crumble topping, ensuring the topping reaches the very edges and covers all of the figs.
  5. Bake the crumble until golden brown and crunchy, which will take about 20-30 minutes. Once cooked, remove from the oven.
  6. Spoon the warm crumble into serving bowls and enjoy with a dollop of Greek yoghurt, freshly whipped cream or a drizzle of coconut cream.

Natural Skincare helps Fairy Taffy shine bright!

We were lucky enough to meet the wonderful Tiffany (Fairy Taffy) at the Linden Leaves Founder’s Evening in February. Here she shares how and why she came to love Linden Leaves Natural Skincare…

I have been using Linden leaves for over 3 years now and I am so grateful to Brigit [Blair, Linden Leaves founder] for creating this gentle yet effective skincare.

I started up a fairy entertainer business called Taffy’s Kids Parties in 2011 but all the costume makeup, face-paint and excessive amounts of glitter left my skin oily and I would break out like never before. Who will hire a “spotty fairy”, I thought, not to mention how wonderfully honest to a fault kids can be at times.

I tried lots of different skincare ranges designed to combat acne, from drug store brands to the $100+ ‘as seen on TV’ stuff, but the side effects from all those harsh chemicals were worse than the acne. My skin got really dry, red and blotchy with everything I tried and my fairy wishes weren’t working either!

But then one day my mum took me to the local pharmacy were a lady was demonstrating Linden leaves and she gave me some information about the Natural Skincare range. It sounded so good my mum brought me the Skincare Essentials pack containing the Purifying Cleanser, Balancing Toner and Essential Facial Moisturiser.

My hopes weren’t high. I thought it was going to be just ‘another product to try which will ultimately let me down, but at least its natural’… Well, once I tried the products that night I saw that they were different than the rest (in a good way!). They were so gentle, didn’t sting or burn like other ones I had tried, and had such a refreshing subtle scent. The skincare products were non sticky, easily absorbed and super hydrating. My skin just drank it up and within a week I noticed such an improvement in my acne, the dry skin had gone and my skin looked more alive, is this magic? (I thought to myself).

Now 3 years later and I am hooked. The Natural Skincare range has really helped me to shine bright as a fairy, princess, queen or fairytale character to make lots of children smile all over Auckland!

I now use the same Skincare Essentials products every day, and also the Soothing Eye Makeup Remover which removes that pesky fairy glitter better than anything else I’ve ever used!

My favorite product is the Porcelain Brightening Serum. This is my secret weapon against aging and dull skin. It’s like a facial in a bottle! The organic white tea and wild daisy flower extract ingredients bring brightness and life to my face and at 31 years old I’m proud to say that I have been asked by people many times if I’m 18-20 years old!

Thank you Linden Leaves for your magic Natural Skincare that has helped me to shine and spread joy and magic across Auckland .

Xoxo Fairy Taffy (Tiffany Burkett)

Meet Delia Clare: March’s Winner of $2,000 of Linden Leaves!

Meet Delia Clare, March’s 20th Anniversary Competition winner! We had a chat to her about some of her favourite things, and how she felt when she found out she’d won $2,000 of Linden Leaves!

How did you feel when you found out you had won this month’s draw?
I felt like a kid on Christmas morning! Such a generous prize. My husband was not so excited, he read ‘Indian Leaves’ when I told him and thought we had won a whole lot of Indian food. But now he’s looking forward to receiving his very own moisturiser instead.

Tell us a little more about yourself?
We live in a little house in Point Chevalier (Auckland). I work as a textile designer and I’m really enjoying renovating my house at the moment.

What are some of your favourite things?
I love traveling, seeing new sights and eating delicious food. I’m currently really getting into expanding my vegetable garden.

What is your skincare routine?
I’m trying to take better care of my skin now I’m 30, so I’m using a good cleanser, BHA exfoliant, a serum packed with all those helpful anti aging ingredients and I also wear sunscreen every day. I use oil around my eyes morning and night.

What is your favourite Linden Leaves Product?
I love the Miraculous Facial Oil – rosehip oil is so nourishing and this gives your skin a helping hand when it’s feeling a little lacklustre. I’m looking forward to trying the Moisture Replenishing Masque.

Meet Sandra Bradnock: February’s Winner of $2,000 of Linden Leaves!

Meet Sandra Bradnock, February’s 20th Anniversary Competition winner! We had a chat to her about some of her favourite things, and how she felt when she found out she’d won $2,000 of Linden Leaves!

How did you feel when you found out you had won this month’s draw?

I honestly didn’t believe it at first when I received your email. When I read it a second time it began to sink in!

Tell us a little more about yourself?

I still work every day and hope to continue for some time yet. Although, as my job is physical, the joints are beginning to protest!

What are some of your favourite things?

I love my garden, reading and travel, with the UK being my favourite destination as my youngest son lives there. I am also privileged to live on the same property as my only grandson which makes life interesting!

What is your skincare routine?

As an almost 66 year old I have an established beauty routine. I wear makeup every day (even when out in the garden) and never go to bed without completely  cleansing and applying a night cream. I have been very lucky with my skin but do put it down to my inherited genes as most of the females in our family have enjoyed the same. But I still work hard to keep it looking good!

What is your favourite Linden Leaves Product?

My favourite Linden Leaves product has to be the Memories Body Oil (in fact the entire Memories range). The perfume is lovely and I feel quite relaxed after indulging in it. I also enjoy using the organic white tea Soothing Eye Makeup Remover as I find it very gentle on the skin around the eyes.

Vegan beauty products: just a trend, or something more?

Veganism. Just a phrase you hear thrown around by Lululemon clad mums as they sip on their morning green smoothie after yoga class, right? Wrong! Veganism is so much more than a trend – it is an ethical mindset shaped to promote a more humane and caring world. It is this mindset that guides Linden Leaves as we navigate an industry traditionally dominated by chemical laden and animal derived products.

You’re probably noticing that society is becoming more and more conscious of the chemical and animal ingredients in many products, and where these ingredients come from. You don’t have to be a vegan or vegetarian to care about these sort of things! Most people wouldn’t knowingly put chemicals in their mouths, so why would you put them on their skin?! We encourage our customers to make conscious and well-informed decisions about the brands and products that they use on their skin.

Linden Leaves is proud that none of our products are tested on animals, all of our products are suitable for vegetarians, and the vast majority of our products are suitable for vegans (exclusions are the Footcare Foot Massage Cream, our body butters, and Natural Skincare Lip Balm, which include manuka honey and beeswax). We take great care to ensure that our business does not have negative effects on the environment and lives of animals.

SAFEshopper, an initiative by SAFE (Save Animals From Exploitation),  aims to help Kiwi shoppers use their consumer power to select cosmetic and household products that have not been tested on animals. Linden Leaves is proud to be listed on SAFEshopper as a company that does not conduct animal testing nor sells our products to countries requiring animal testing by law.

We love meeting Linden Leaves fans like Bonni!

We met many wonderful fans of Linden Leaves last week at our Founder’s Evening event held at the Linden Leaves Parnell store. It was a fabulous evening where guests chatted with Linden Leaves’ founder, Brigit Blair, and learnt all about her natural skincare secrets!

At the event, we were lucky enough to meet Bonni – an Aucklander and Linden Leaves enthusiast! We asked her a few questions about why she’s such a fan of Linden Leaves…

What do you love about Linden Leaves?

I love that Linden Leaves uses natural products that have a gorgeous scent and packaging. I also like to support New Zealand companies and love the fact that Linden Leaves was started in Christchurch in Brigit’s kitchen.

What is your favourite Linden Leaves product and why?

I love them all but, if I have to choose, I’ll say the Miraculous Facial Oil is a product I wouldn’t do without. My skin is very dry and sensitive. I love that I can blend this beautifully scented oil into my other facial products for some extra hydration and luminosity!

How has Linden Leaves changed your life?

My skin is ultra sensitive and even products for sensitive skin react with mine! Not so with Linden Leaves! This is the first time that I have found a certified natural range that is improving my skin, with no adverse reactions. I am a fan for life!
