Hand Sanitisers… who knew that this year’s “must have” would be a purse size spray of Hand Sanitiser? But it is. They disappeared overnight and now it seems like a lot of options are flooding the market. Here are some things to think about when choosing your hand sanitiser:
1. What is the alcohol content? Scientific studies have shown the hand sanitisers with more than 70% alcohol content (ours has 75%) are very effective at killing 99.9% of germs including bacteria and most viruses. This is what you want to use when you’re heading out into the world in Level 2 and 3.
2. What’s it made from? Sadly, some hand sanitisers you find on shelf have some pretty nasty ingredients (even banned ones) so make sure you read through the ingredients before you buy. In particular look out for carbomer and triethanolamine which can cause allergic reactions and toxicity with extended use. Triethanolamine is banned in Europe for use in cosmetics products.
3. Where is it made? A large chunk of hand sanitisers in the New Zealand market are made overseas. Think about buying Hand Sanitiser Made in New Zealand – aside from the obvious of supporting local to keep NZ working, buying something made in New Zealand you know you can trust what it says on the label and you know that the manufacturers and employees are paid a minimum wage and adhere to all New Zealand worksafe practices.
4. Can I reuse it? Anyone notice that its pretty tricky making environmental & health conscious choices at the same time right now? One thing you can do is look for refillable/reusable hand sanitisers with a screw lid that you can refill from a larger container. Every little bit helps.
5. Will it ‘kill’ my hands as well? Unfortunately, a high alcohol formula is going to strip your skin of its natural oils. There is no avoiding it. So, look for a hand sanitiser with caring natural ingredients, so you are protecting and caring for your hands at the same time. At Linden Leaves we added Pohutukawa and Kawakawa extracts. These New Zealand natives have natural antibacterial and protective qualities and mean it’s just that little bit less drying on the skin. You can also help things by applying a good quality hand cream. Try our Memories Hand Cream with rose to help relieve stress and anxiety or our calming Absolute Dreams Hand Cream with lavender.
